an observation

Bella Swan, like Tess of the god-forsaken d'Urbervilles before her, is an idiotic character.

I can not stand her. Fact. All she does is pine, obsess (she obsesses a lot - its creepy) and feel sorry for herself because she's in love with a alabaster coloured vampire.
God girl get a clue and a grip - because every time I turn a page where it's just her and her gloomy thoughts...I start to wither a little. She depresses me - the Twilight 'saga' depresses me.

Which makes me even more annoyed that I can't put the damn book down, *that and maybe the fact that i spent a small fortune on the books so i have to read them*

It's not well written - but its entertaining. Books should be, whether they are Wordsworth or literal trash like this they get kids reading and using their imagination...

But back to Bella - I have never disliked a character - that i was probably meant to like more ( a nod to Tess of Hardy's 'classic' urgh), she is selfish and self indulgent, weak and stupid. Not a great character for teenage girls to aspire or 'relate to'.
The other characters are fine. In fact I relish having contact with everyone else but her.
Unfortunately she narrates the damn thing.

Characters like Jasper, Emmett, Jacob, Alice, Jess and Charlie (love him) are great, funny characters wholly deserving of more book time and dialogue - but alas the author fancy's herself a Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet) and Hardy (urgh) by trying too too hard to show the desperatin and despair that a 17 year old has for her 17 (give a hundred years) vampire boyfriend.

She is boring. Its everyone and everything around her that isn't. She herself has nothin to say. It is only when she finds herself in the presence of these 'monsters' vampires, werewolves etc that the story gets interesting.

Maybe thats the point? Maybe we're meant to get a sense of the empty dullness of her life and how crap she actually feels that when she does come in to contact with these beings and then looses them - its UNBEARABLE - just like her I am obsessing over these creatures to return. Anything that doesnt leave me alone with her is a blessing.
