Rant of the day
The Sunday UPMarket in East London is my other Vice. Friend and I used to visit every sunday straight. Its just such a wonderful environment. Who knew that back in 1997 when I would complain to mummy about going to Petticoat Lane, that there was a haven waiting to be built next door 8/9 years later. Since the new year we have been once...the weekend gone in fact. We haven't been for a long time (having partially overdosed on trips) because we were spending to much money...oh and we had jobs that sporadically bled into the weekends. Admitedly it wasn't the same - the market and 'east end' is increasingly popular, and for good reason, word of mouth has brought the old markets bag from the grave, like Camden and Borough before (next up is Deptford methinks?) But it's too crowded and feels like a scene. Now I don't begrudge anyone of a good thrift, it's healthy and exciting to be searching for that individual gem. But the place is laden with people who claim to be individual (indie) but look the same, act and talk the same (sarcastic mumble or Noel Fielding/Brand-esque fantastical word play...i'm sorry wtf?) Ironic that. Marginally they are all not east Londoners...or even born and bred Londoners at all (no they are fighting 'turf wars" down in Hackney) but its ok...your'e an *insert creative* student from small town and your free and in London...Brick Lane and Shorditch are just cool and dirty enough to be indie my agyness deyn, rocakbilly, 60's doting, skinny dranepiped birds nested haired friend. You've changed now you're here, you can act like your different.Indie yeah? not really though. Its not even a movement ...because its all been done before, and better. I think this is because my generation has it easy. Its very now to be young, and I love it, i do. But it's not really a struggle - I don't feel like I'm really living in the midst of a collective that will go down in history ...not like the mods, punks or even Brat Pack times. We are emulating them all right now. That in itself is exciting because there isnt a specific style today - and in a roundabout way my generation is all about doing what you want and not excluding anyone... but its unsatisfying all the same, because at least back then the majority didnt pretend to be indiviuals. Its all talk nowadays... well I tell a lie, a lot of posing, narcissistic doting and tiresome 'sarcastic' humor. *Macquita Oliva, Alex Zane - just stop it.*
